(Massolino Barolo Vigna Rionda, Piedmont) The four generations of Massolinos, with primo holdings in Serralunga d’Alba, define the phrase “small family winery.” Their 2004 estate Barolo displays the meatiness and power of this extraordinary vintage, married with the restraint and elegance that has become the Massolino style. The complex aromatics of cedar and roasted hazelnuts are enchanting; the palate of savory mushrooms and veal stock is delicious. The long finish is exquisitely balanced by earthy Nebbiolo flavors. Naturally high acidity makes this an ideal pairing with countless rich, savory dishes. It may be perfect for autumn and winter, but I intend to drink it all year long. Hot Picks
