  (Giacosa ARNEIS) Giacosa #2 Dear Friends, This wine was just bottled a few days ago and it is more than compelling - it is one of the first wines to be released every year from the new vintage in Piedmont and it is almost like having a winery cask sample following the fall harvest. No wine has increased more in fanfare (and, unfortunately, price) over the last 3-4 years than Giacosa’s Roero Arneis - probably from the Parker reviews but who can be sure? This white wine has caused so much additional notoriety for Giacosa that he is actually starting to concentrate on it. Not that it was an afterthought in the past, but he’s actually spending the time to make a wine that is worth $30-50 instead of an everyday $10-15 bottle as it has been (don’t worry, that doesn’t mean more new oak). The first vintage with the new high-end philosophy is 2007, a vintage that produced less than stellar red wines in many parts of Europe but not the whites - it was outstanding for whites in many areas and Giacosa is in love with his 2007 Arneis - so much that the price is almost double the 2004 and 2005. If you support the efforts of Burgundy producers or barrel aged Pouilly Fume and Sancerre, I believe you will find this wine more than reasonably priced for the level Giacosa is trying to play in. Italian Criots-Batard Jr in a cool vintage? Whatever it is, many of you will fall in love with it. As with many of the other Giacosa wine this year, allocations are down and prices are up - way up (this wine will sell from $20-30 in Europe when it is released this week) which means “yikes” for the US...$30-45 Giacosa Arneis? That’s tough to stomach but at $25 or so, it’s more than worth it. This wine is a restaurant staple and they take over 75% of the US allocation - my only chance to acquire it is in late January every year so here you go...
