2016 BLACK QUEEN SPARKLING SHIRAZ
Founded in 1979, Peter Lehmann Wines brings unmatched diversity, uniqueness and quality from more than 800 hand-tended vineyards across the length and breadth of all 14 Barossa sub-regions. The quality of Peter Lehmann Wines are a testament to our relationships, allowing us access to the region’s finest grapes.

Sparkling Shiraz is a unique Australian wine style, and former Chief Winemaker Andrew Wigan was inspired to make a great sparkling wine from Barossa Shiraz in the 1980s. Often referred to as the ‘Jewel in our Crown,’ our Black Queen Sparkling Shiraz is a unique and indulgent wine crafted from premium vineyards in South Australia’s Barossa region. This regal sparkling wine boasts bold flavours and a fine, persistent and elegant bead.
Sourced from a single vineyard of Survivor vine Shiraz (planted 1928), grown by the Schmidt family in Light Pass.
REGION
Barossa Valley.

VINTAGE CONDITIONS
The 2016 vintage in the Barossa began with warm and dry weather, no disease pressure and one magnificent rain event and the end of January. This was perfectly timed for veraison and flavour development.

WINEMAKING & MATURATION
Fermented on skins for 7-10 days, pressed, clarified and then matured for 12 months in older French oak hogsheads. The base wine was then bottle-fermented and aged on its yeast lees for 4 years. After degorgement, a small percentage of The King Vintage Port was used as expedition liqueur to build complexity.
COLOUR
Bright red with a dense black core..
NOSE/AROMA
The aroma is abundant in plum, fennel seed and dark choclate aromas.
PALATE
The cool, slow ripening vintage of 2016 has melded the quality of Black Queen in to a age-worthy classic. Naturally low in tannins, the wine is soft and abundant in rich dark fruits with a lovely christmas cake-like finish. The sweetness is apparent, but balanced by the complexity of fruit-weight and time spent on tirage before disgorgement.
ANALYSIS
Alc/Vol 14.0% T.A 6.0g/L pH 3.42 RS 27.4
PEAK DRINKING
Best drunk now, however will comfortably develop further in the cellar for another 10-12 years.
