This Tempranillo was made from the famed Rolleri Vineyard just outside of Angels Camp. It is the first vineyard to plant Tempranillo in Calaveras County and among the earliest plantings in California. The 2008 vintage was a tough one for most grapes grown in Calaveras County, with spring frosts affecting the consistency of ripening throughout the growing season. Tempranillo was hit especially hard by the frosts, but grape yields decreased the size of crop and gave better than average quality with good acidity and structure. Fermented with a Spanish yeast strain and punched down three times a day during fermentation, the pressed wine was racked to a goodly portion of new American Oak barrels.
