  • 2010 Château d'Angludet

    Very nice wine.
    Dark and brooding still.
Think dark fruits and smooth but noticeable tannins.
For my tastes too young and will leave my next bottles for another few years.
That's if I can stop drinking them!

  • 2016 Pio Cesare Barbaresco

My first time with this wine.
Not cheap (£45) so whatever it tastes like, poor PQR!
But I'm on a Nebbiolo learning curve at the moment and I'm learning that nothing that's drinkable is "good" value!

Double decanted, and as I was doing so, wafts of raspberry Rowntree's Fruit Pastiilles, if anyone from the UK remembers them!

Poured a glass and immediately closed up on the nose, so will wait an hour for a proper smell and taste. Super clear, cherry red colour, dripping with legs.

After an hour+ still reticent on the nose, but some floral and cherry notes alongside some darker woody, balsamic ones.

Nicely balanced on the palate. Immediate rush of sweet red fruits, smooth well-integrated but noticeable tannins, then the cut of acidity on the finish that lasts and lasts but lacks nuance or depth.

In summary, lacks depth of fruit on both nose and palate. While young still, will any fruit reemerge? After 4+ hours no nose at all, but extra tarry notes.

Like most Nebbiolo based wines, this wine makes much, much more sense with food - roast pork - and becomes, almost, a wine that warrants its price tag.

For me, a Sunday roast beef, special occasion, share with good friends, type wine.

Glad to have tried it, but at this price will be seeking out more affordable Nebbiolo "hits" elsewhere, assuming they exist!

I'm thinking declassified Barolo carrying the Langhe DOC.
    Thoughts?

  • 2011 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    Lovely wine.
But I've been a fan of Beaucastel since I bought a case of the 1990 - last bottle in 2020.
This isn't quite in the same league as the 1990 but is delicious nevertheless. Still a slight purple-hue but turning to deep crimson red. Dripping with legs Floral + meaty + tarry + red berry notes on the nose with sweet red fruit on the palate, with soft tannins and a crisp finish.

Well balanced with no hint of the 14.5%. Not sure of the assemblage of grape varieties.

Very drinkable now and paired nicely with a sausage pasta dish.

    Day 2
Tertiary notes on the nose - spicy wood and mushrooms, smooth with Kirsch notes on the palate.
Lacking the depth and vibrancy of day 1.

I'm no expert, but based on previous vintages I'd say this is in the second half of its drinking window.

I have cases of the '12, '13, '14, '15 and '16, '17 but stopped buying after that as I prefer lower alcohol wines now, and I'm not sure I'll be alive by the time the later vintages will ready and to my taste!!

6/7/2022 7:21:00 PM - Comrade, thanks for your message re the Isole e Olena and making the damned bottle last over 3 days. The answer to your question is 'iron will' and devotion to the cause. Being a hopeless lightweight when it comes to handling alcohol also helps. You might like this quote from John McGahern, which a friend thought described me: "His abhorrence and fear of alcohol did not extend to his power as host. He kept a huge cupboard of drinks ... and loved to serve large measures to visiting relatives - especially those he disliked - about which there was a definite element of spreading bait for garden snails." Happy drinking.
