  • 2014 Château Certan de May

At CdB HK dinner. Paired with Latour a Pomerol 2014.

Much softer approachable style and I think well judged for the vintage. Lighter style but lovely nose of raspberries, red cherry and some spice. Refreshing and uplifting to drink already and this is clearly in its drinking window. Will have a very interesting 10 years ahead of it and expect it will improve 1-2 points. Great balance and mouthfeel, very well made and smartly done! Decent to good QPR. Not a 30 year wine but we don’t need everything to be like that!

  • 2014 Château Latour à Pomerol

At CdB HK dinner. Paired with Certan de May 2014.

This was a tannic primary beast. Not quite like a barrel sample but not far off. Inky, purple/black. Completely closed and sealed up in its tannin and oak straightjacket. Palate is a a wave of dark fruit and then the tannins are vicious basically rendering the wine undrinkable with any pleasure even with food. No Pomerol scent or subtlety here! Needs at least 5 years if not 10 to come around. Wasn’t expecting this!

  • 2014 Château Smith Haut Lafitte

At CdB HK dinner. Paired with the Dom de Chevalier, this was hands down the winner. Creamier cherry fruit notes, more glossy and fruit seems riper and fuller, Some St. Julien notes of soil and leaves which is very interesting and complimentary to the dark cherry and blackberry fruit at present. Lovely mouth feel. Yes young and vigorous but all in balance. Cashmere tannins and lovely medium plus body and finish. Delicious now and exciting future ahead. Very respectable QPR.
