Surprisingly very good. Popped and poured, no wait. It was singing right from bottle. Plenty of fruit, one dimensional, yet it was very well balanced and had a silky smooth mouth fell. It's about to start it's decline, so if you have any, drink up and enjoy.

Nice red fruit! I got aromas of black cherry pie, slightly burnt toast, maybe graham cracker. Mocha, rhubarb, cardamom, hints of mint or menthol, some spice and a little chocolate. There was a slight funkiness that was actually pleasant and appealing.

Taste like cherry liquor without the presence of alcohol. After an hour that taste seemed to be more like raspberry: a nostalgic reflection of Chambord. The tannins were mild sweet and somewhat chewy.

The acidity was mild. The wine was well balanced with seamless integration. It had a pleasant long finish which seemed to go on and on and on. The funkiness that I mentioned was ever present. It actually added character to the wine. After 60 minutes in the glass the wine homogenized. It was very smooth and well rounded. It was very reminiscent of the 2009 and 2012 vintages.

To me this is another example of Classic Keenan Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve. It is a fabulous wine that personifies the high elevation mountain fruit of the Keenan Estate vineyards and their style of wine making. Bravo !

This 2016 Keenan Reserve seems to be in a sweet spot and might be at its peak. However, I believe that it will remain in this state for at least five more years. It could actually get better during the next couple of years.

  • 2016 D.R. Stephens Cabernet Sauvignon DR II St. Helena Winery

Red and black fruit, dominated by blueberry and black raspberry. I got some cocoa and spearmint. There was a unique sweet pungent vanilla like fragrance, but it was not from the oak. Cherry overtones. I got some salted sour dough, smooth tanned leather. It was almost like the “play dough” that kids play with. That's meant to be a positive descriptor. It was a very appealing aroma.

The flavors were in line with the aromas. The acidity was medium plus. The tannins were medium plus. The tannins were well structured and inviting, They integrated well with the acidity and the alcohol was resolved.

After an hour the wine developed in the glass and cherry notes were prevalent. There was a slight eucalyptus undertone. The mouthfeel was well rounded. The tannins calmed down a bit and were semi sweet and silky.

The tannins are still dominant and forefront in this vintage: which was common with the 2016 vintage. Although this is a very good wine right now, it will likely benefit from another two years in the bottle before it fully matures. I would drink the 2017 first and even the 2019 Collateral before I go back to the D.R.II 2016.

Overall, a very good wine. Still developing. It’s like a horse race. It’s going to “Place” this year. “Show” next year and “Win” in three years. Anyway you look at it, it a Thoroughbred Stallion!
    A nicely done Hunnicut wine!

4/4/2019 2:49:00 PM - Hi Yondan, sorry for the delay in responding. B Cellars was definitely a highlight - the higher end wines there are worth the $$, but they spare no expense on the hospitality and visiting side which was nice. Plus a range of varietals and price ranges that make it welcoming to all. I like my trusty Groth/SLWC/Outpost combo, but for my next trip in June I am doing new visits to small producer/intimate tastings: Bure/Fait Main, Sodhani, DiCostanzo, Memento Mori, Anomaly, Kinsman to name a few. Do you have any other recommendations you could provide?
