  • 2021 Tablas Creek Côtes de Tablas

Such a beautiful and balanced Rhone blend with youthful, saturated blue and red berry fruits. Drinks well on PnP but benefits from more air. Combines the sheer freshness of the 2017 TCV Cotes de Tablas with the extra focus and depth of the 2014 Cotes. The Grenache-driven character is fresh, not jammy, tasting more of Pinot Noir's Morello cherry and cinnamon spice than the variety's more typical strawberry and pepper expression. Syrah, Mourvedre, and Counoise moderate the alcohol and add savory and spice notes (and in my opinion elevate the 2021 Cotes over the equally beautiful 2021 TCV Grenache).

An example of how a humble southern Rhone blend, and this is one from California, can deliver at the level of the best of Burgundy or the North Rhone. 92-94

  • 2015 Domaine Faury St. Joseph (Hedonism)

Staining black-red purple, on the upward slope, full bodied, and the fruit is not overwhelmed by its savory side. An abundance of blackberry and dark plum, some black olive. Not velvety or suave but a wine with stuffing and deep flavor. Closer to a 91 after 48 hours. Another half decade should delineate its bounty.

  • 2019 Tablas Creek Vaccarèse

Very dark but a less saturated black than Syrah, possessing a degree of translucence. The palate is pleasantly refreshing, with cleansing tannins, and lightly savory, distinct from Syrah. It gained depth and flavor over 48 hours (good for cellaring?), shedding a trace of Irish tea bitters. In sum a good wine for meat and fat, and although not very fruity would add needed texture to overtly fruity Rhone varietals such as Grenache and Counoise.

12/10/2019 1:35:00 PM - According to a contact at the recent En Primeur tasting, the 2018 Esprit is less extroverted than the 2017s and might be closest in style to the 2013s among recent vintages. Depth of flavor, great structure and balance, aromatically still somewhat reserved. The 2018 Panoplie is monolithic, with ample dark berry and licorice but needs more time to develop to evaluate usefully. I am a big fan of the 2013 Esprit, but would note that Wine Spectator was less than enthusiastic about it. It has great balance and elegance but also a certain reserve. I attended the Panoplie vertical in July 2019 and found the 2011s and 2013s my favorites (Personal preference descending order was 2011, 2013, 2008, 2017, 2016, 2007, 2003, 2002).

12/9/2019 7:26:00 AM - Unable to attend the 2019 en primeur at Tablas Creek. Of vintages 2011 to 2017, my favorite Esprit has been the elegant red fruited 2015. I'll let you know whatever I hear if anything about the 2018s.

12/8/2019 8:18:00 AM - I was curious whether you made it to the Tablas Creek en primeur yesterday for the 2018 vintage. I did not make it this year and was looking for any observations I could find. Tablas has ratcheted up prices again and I want to be discerning.

10/14/2015 5:58:00 AM - Thanks. I'll keep it in mind. I am currently not in a wine tasting group but one that centers more on culinary events planned by the four wives, allowing the four husbands to sneak wine tasting into it.
