Probably gifted from my brother-in-law at a Swiss investment bank, because I prefer mostly European and South American wines, and he prefers mostly California, Oregon and Washington wines. Anyhow, the nose is a little difficult to zero on because we have mesquite wood from the ranch in south Texas burning in the pit for steaks. Nose is very subdued for Cali. . . dark fruits, a little on the dried cherry and blackberry side of the house. On the mouth it screams pencil lead which is not too strong, melting into cherries and blackberries. It's decent on the back palate. It tastes like it might age Pauillac-like, but who knows. The tannin is still reasonably tight, so it's got a few years of life yet in the cave before it peaks. If I see some I'll probably grab it and throw it in the back of the cellar to see what happens.

I'm getting some good licorice, pencil lead and dark fruits on the palate. Not a big syrah fan, especially after being subjected to syrah submersion living in Brisvegas (Brisbane, QLD, AU) for a spell. It would be better if it had a little more perfume on the nose. There's not much there, but a little meaty note. Hopefully will be good with the pork loin cooked in thyme, honey, balsamic, garlic, soy sauce all mixed up and slathered with Tunisian olive oil. I did not pay much for it, so it's a good value at a ~USD28 price point.

  • 2016 Château Prieuré-Lichine

I really liked this one for the money. It's what a good middle of the road Margaux should be. Really started singing after an hour of decanting. 2016 seems to have been a good year for most wines in the area. Still looking for berries that got wrecked. None found, yet. Beautiful, heavy perfume on the nose. Astringency from solid tannins that made it a good wine to pair with a thick NY strip steak and some sweet baby broccolini.
