  • 2014 Emile Herzog Riesling Brand

deep yellow colour, lemony, almost bergamot character on the nose, together with mineral / slate, palate quite rich, powerful and deep with marked cleansing acidity on the finish, long and persistent, as noted before an idiosyncratic characterful wine, from the colour and depth of flavour I wonder if it was vendage tardive but still with high acidity, would be consistent with the 14% abv

  • 2018 Domaine Naturaliste Cabernet Sauvignon Discovery

screw cap, purple red colour, distinct legs on the glass, mulberry rich fruit nose, with some complexity, nice depth on the palate and soft tannins, not subtle but very inviting, I agree with the criticism that it is a bit simple but it is an ideal “second bottle”, “grab as required” or party wine, and for that it is admirable, the bottle tends to go at an alarming rate, maybe it would gain subtlety and nuance with age but my bottles are unlikely to get the chance, top QPR

  • 2004 Tyrrell's Shiraz 4 Acres

perfect mid-neck level and good elastic cork, 2+ hours decanting, colour relatively light red cherry with no discernible brown, “Cardinal Richelieu red” my daughter noted, lovely fine restrained complex and nuanced olive tapenade Shiraz nose, classy and complex, perfect age, still quite fresh, palate also excellent, only of medium weight but great intensity and concentration, lovely flavour, long and persistent, bought at the winery after being impressed in a tasting with the Tyrell’s family winemaker, he presented it as something special, we agreed at the time and this bottle enjoyed now many years later is a confirmation, was stored since then under good conditions and maybe this was also just a good bottle considering some of the recent less enthusiastic reviews - or maybe I was just lucky
