  • NV Perrier-Jouët Champagne Blanc de Blancs

At ristorante Stano in Matera (Italy): Quite the archetype of a Blanc de Blancs champagne! Sweet lemon, if that makes sense, and striking floral notes. On the palate the champagne is light to medium-bodied, fresh, pure, elegantly soft and very refined. The medium finish shows a beautiful balance between sweet but vivid citrus fruit and subtle chalkiness. In a word lovely!

  • 2015 Moët & Chandon Champagne Grand Vintage

Disgorgement 10/2022. A surprisingly good champagne from this very large maison. The perlage is a bit coarse, however, that may be due to the bad stemware in our airbnb in Matera, Italy. On the nose the champagne shows lots of upfront sweet red pinot fruit, some lemony notes, too, and there is a prominent scent of parmesan cheese. In the mouth the champagne is structured and fresh, not the most refined; with some air it builds on the palate, becomes quite full-bodied and intense with a lengthy finish, which feels a bit sweeter than the extra brut-dosage might suggest but also features a good dose of mouth-cleansing chalkiness.
While this champagne has a crowd-pleasing appeal with its emphasis on generous sweet red fruit, there is also plenty of material underneath which should make for some good aging potential.

  • 2020 Château Durfort-Vivens La Nature de Durfort-Vivens

I am a huge fan of this chateau (see my various TNs), however, this wine left me perplexed and honestly I dislike it. The wine smells and tastes red-fruited with an unpleasant strong scent of beetroot, not what you would expect from a pure Cabernet Sauvignon in a ripe vintage. To be fair, there is also some florality and a nice touch of cinnamon. In the mouth the wine feels flat, too sweet and finishes rather abruptly and on a bitter note. Aeration helped, but did not turn the wine around. No, this "natural" expression of Ch. Durfort-Vivens doesn't seem to have anything in common with the 2020 grand vin.

4/17/2021 12:12:00 AM - Dear Eric, thank you for your very kind comment. On the Boillot one thing I noted after posting my note is that this wine is at its most enjoyable in the first hour, after which the structure comes roaring in like a tannin tsunami! The Boillot Beaune 'Les Epenotes' is an easier wine that doesn't trip down the same tannin lane. Both are excellent. By the way, I think German Riesling is the greatest white wine on earth. I am a huge fan of Keller, but most especially of Clemens Busch's admittedly slightly eccentric wines. With the better Rieslings you get the minerality and taughtness of Chablis plus the sensuous pleasures of Montrachet but something else again. I can't get my friends to understand the beauty and complexity of German Spatlese styles, which I find very sad. I think these are extraordinary - so much more than semi-sweet.
