  • 2022 Kumeu River Chardonnay Estate

    Light lemon colour,
, An initial nose of oyster shells and lemon opens out to show unripe white peach, hints of perfumed, slightly waxy quince, herbs, honey and vanilla toffee. On the palate, a creamy mouthfeel, balanced by quite high acidity, with flavours of savoury, unripe stone fruits with a finish of saline vanilla. A classy inviting nose, creamy but chewy and refreshing, with just a hint of sweetness, and a saline finish. This is a beautifully balanced iteration of cool climate Chardonnay that should continue to develop over the next 5 years.

  • 1996 Château Meyney

An intense garnet , with little rim fading , and pronounced legs( only 12.5% alc - those were the days!). At first, it comes across as dense and closed, but a couples of hours decant reveals the wine's lighter side - a smoky nose of menthol and eucalyptus gives way to tobacco and cedar, hints of blackcurrant and raspberry, vanilla and cocoa. Acidity is still medium, as are the still definite tannins, with flavours of tobacco, cocoa and hints of blackcurrant/ blackberry. This wine will not charm the birds off the trees, but it is a solid mature claret, and I see no reason why well-kept bottles should not last for another 5 years. Drink with strongly flavoured food, or cheeses.

  • 2019 Domaine de Montille Bourgogne Blanc Le Clos du Chateau

Looks a light lemon in the glass, with indistinct legs ( a modest12.5% alc ). As others have noted, the nose is ,at first , restrained, but opens out to show chalkiness, hints of flint, apple and pear, peach and guava, herbs, and a slightly buttery toasted oatmeal! A complex nose leads into a palate , with quite a full, slightly oily body, medium acidity, and flavours of unripe peach , quince, and sour apple. The finish is dry , saline, and chalky. An understated, elegant wine , whose charms slowly grow in the glass. Will be good for another 3-4 years. Recommended.
