  • 2015 Jean-Michel Stephan Côte-Rôtie

Have tried several vintages of this producer’s entry level cote rotie going back to 2005 with similar result. Would describe as flawed if I didn’t know the producer’s goal was to “create a wine without any corrective products, to enhance digestibility and aromatic complexity”. Wine was triple decanted. Lots of CO2 in suspension being released. Nose is indeed complex with Brett, Smoke, Burnt Rubber and roasted stones. Persistent acidic slightly caustic lift. It wasn’t until 2 hours after decants spent coffee grounds, hints of dark berry fruit and raw meat emerged still blanketed under CO2. Acidity seems High, not sharp but, giving a sour taste. If you’ve ever had a Lambic, its very similar. Soupy and cloudy, finish is short other than lingering bret. I can respect the vintners philosophy but, at a cote rotie price point this wine is something to be pondered rather than enjoyed with guests over a sumptuous meal. Suggest quadruple decant 3+ hours prior to service… Na zdrowie

  • 2010 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée

    See prior notes:
Served in Burgundy glass nose is really something to experience. Open for business 30 minutes after cork pull. If you like your fruit (black cherry and black raspberry) balanced against non fruit (Leather, Musk and Smoke) components its in a good place at the moment.
Acidity spot on, tannins noticeable but supportive, medium plus weight with good concentration, Palate almost creamy underneath tannic backbone, Mourvèdre shines here, Yes, there is some barnyard but, when served temp 60-65 its very minimal. Alc 14% seems understated, buzz buzz, yet there is no sense of heat.
Day 2 after vacuum and chill brings more robust tannins and Uber Leather. Further aging should accentuate the non fruit components. Purchased upon release, stored accordingly, enjoyed with grilled beef… Na zdrowie

  • 2019 Scherrer Winery Pinot Noir Russian River Valley

Stellar aromatics, as the pour hits the glass, minty herbals, cranberry, strawberry/rhubarb pie, Freshness. Tension on the palate, spicy Bright red meaty pinot fruit, medium plus acidity with fruit bordering on sapidity, tart damsom plum, Coolness with 14.8% alc. and No sense of heat. There’s a tug of war going on right now between the bright acidity and the coiled fruit. Can’t wait to see who wins 5 years down the road. Drinking much better now than upon release. Should be long lived and would pair wonderfully with duck breast. Purchased upon release winery direct and stored accordingly …Na zdrowie
