  • 2004 Château Larmande

Nice come-up at ~50USD retail. Mild enough that it's no doubt a right-banker with a decade or so of age, flavors still quite young on first day, with plentiful sweet and sharp dark fruits, and now in the second day moving to plums and licorice and even some salty, creamy caramel. Fine tannin still in the swim, acid lifted. Buying and laying for a further 5-7 years if there are any left.

From glass. Lovely nose - mysterious and smoky, citrus and tropicals further back behind this diaphanous curtaining. Initially a very light, "watery" mouthfeel, but later more assertive. We're very likely in "éthéré" territory here - a fineness, a finesse. Wisps of smoky citrus and bitter flinty "mineral," the acid has a tiny but certain bite, and the finish is long. But sigh, not to fall in love. For this wine shall be loved.

  • 2014 Arnot-Roberts Cabernet Sauvignon Clajeux Vineyard

From glass. Open, closed, and then open again nose of sweet, juicy dark fruit - a little distant but delightful. Slivers of cocoanut, later hints of bell pepper; before first sip, creamier. Pleasure awaited. Palate: very balanced, very clean. Lively acid, diffuse but not obviously obstructive tannin. Fresh red/dark fruit, some attractive bitterness. Overall impression: this could have been a beefy Morgon. Hmm... of quality, pleasant drinking now, very likely not yet at its best, but I'm a little more skeptical than hopeful.
