  • 2008 Château Pontet-Canet

    Double-decanted for about 5 hours before drinking with sirloin and rib-eye. Sweet black fruit, menthol, mint and pencil shavings on the nose. Fresh and juicy on the palate with blackberry and black cherry flavours, and a touch of cedar. Tannins are fine. Medium finish. This is a nicely balanced wine, albeit still quite primary.

    This was our first bottle from a 12-pack and I would say this wine is open for business. However, I won't rush to try the next bottle as I think it has a lot of time in front of it and that its development will be relatively pedestrian.

  • 2013 Argiano Brunello di Montalcino

    Cherry menthol, mint and spice on the nose. Lovely fruity palate with a touch of spice. Incredibly smooth texture followed by some serious puckering from the tannins. Great balance with a medium finish. This was our first bottle from a six pack and we were unsure if it would be too early to try but it wasn't. It will certainly develop over the next decade but is fantastic drinking now. Drunk with spaghetti Bolognese on day one and lasagne on day two.

  • NV Domaine Madeloc Banyuls Solera

    Made from 90 % Grenache Noir and 10 % Grenache Gris grown on schist soils. The solera at Domaine Pages was started in 1921 and continued until 1962 when it was forgotten about until Pierre Gaillard bought the estate and discovered this wine which makes for quite a find.

    As others have noted this is a fantastic wine. We drunk it over many weeks, a little at a time. Dried fruit aromas, nut and chocolate on the palate. Very long finish, absolutely delicious. A great alternative to a port or sherry and excellent value for money.
