2006 Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée de mon Aïeul

One of the best wines I have had in years. After 18 years you might think the fruit has subsided, but, you would be wrong. Rich, vibrant, harmonizing red and black fruit characterize this beauty. How does it taste so young? Blackberry, red currant, raspberry, strawberry, and more.
Tannins are almost non-existent. The balance is perfect. I'm sure this will age well for years, but it is so good now, why would you wait?
Note: Tasting note is for a magnum.

Drinking great right now. Tannins have mellowed. The fruit is fresh and vibrant. Many years left for this wine to mature, but if you like fruit over earthy flavors, now is a good time to open a bottle.

After 18 years this Cab retains it balance. Initially the alcohol comes at you like a charging bull, but with time to air, the fruit appears and is surprisingly fresh. Blackberry and black currant combine with subtle earthy flavors. It does not appear this wine has many years left to improve, but it does not seem likely to deteriorate quickly either. Best to drink now or in the next couple of years.
