The first bottle got me a bit worried, but it seems it was all transport distress. The second one, opened two weeks later, was extremely drinkable. A slight touch of VA on the nose, adds to an aroma of red berries such as raspberries and cranberries, with a somewhat flinty and spicy layer. Comes together very nice, and very typical for the grape and origin.

Juicy in the mouth, with a nice acidity up front that continues to carry the structure, with some slight tannins coming mid palate. Quite similar to the Rosato from the same year, but with more depth and tannins. The juicy feeling reminds of drinking redcurrant juice, with a very similar stinging acidity and freshness. The berries carry on, reminding of wild strawberries, with a distinct spicy taste.

The aftertaste gets a bit mellow, but I think this will tighten up in a while. No tannins to speak of in the aftertaste, but the structure is carried by the acidity. For now it’s a very quaffable and juicy version of this wine, very, very different from the 2017 which was high on alcohol and tannins. I think it still has some potential once it settles properly. I would give it a couple of months.

Light and juicy but expressionless and boring. Not particularly aromatic, and somewhat harsh in the mouth. Became slightly mousey after a couple of hours, and completely undrinkable the next day and had be poured out. Ok to drink if properly chilled and chugged.

A real wow-moment when first opened. Is it black currant juice, or is it wine? Even though I usually don’t care about color, this one has to be mentioned, with a fantastic dark hue of orange, between deep amber and tea that has been left for too long. The black currant aroma develops into old fashioned raspberry candy, and then a whiff of acetone comes into play, just to disappear after with some more air. A couple of hours in the decanter, and the smell is more caramel like, with berries, candied apples and some spice. A fascinating, complex and powerful aroma.

Even though the deep orange makes you expect tannins, the structure is very pleasant, with only a very slight tannic touch and balanced acidity. Very fruity on the palate, and not completely dry. A very rich impression, the immense concentration somewhat a shock for your taste buds. A lot of things going on, and not easy to describe. It seems to be a combination of tertiary, developed flavors, with nuts, crème de cassis and caramel, and some very nice juicyness, with black currant, forest berries and dried lemon. Very fascinating and powerful. The fact that there is some rest sugar puts me a little bit off, but not enough to dislike the complete package. A very long aftertaste, finishing of with fruit tea (again some forest fruit), lemon zest and candy like acidity.

Might be difficult to pair with food, but worked charms with cheese and charcutière, where the slight sugar came in handy.
