  • 2015 Château d'Issan

Decanted for 5 hrs and showed really well. Deep purple with Blackcurrant and Parma violets on the nose. Classic Margaux with an elegant smooth mouth feel, velvety on the palate with dark fruit, violet and pencil shavings. Medium tannins with long and refined finish.
Will obviously improve but very approachable now.

  • 2014 VHR Cabernet Sauvignon Vine Hill Ranch

Even though VHR is on the same Oakville terroir as Mayacamas and Harlin it somehow tastes so different to its cohorts.

This is the first of my 2014s and it was worth the wait, albeit that it still has improvement in it. After a three hour decant it was still a little reserved but gradually opened over the next 2-3 hrs to reveal a dark violet both in color and bouquet. On the palate there’s blackberry, black cherry and a little minerality. As it progressed there was cocoa and a lengthy finish.

  • 2017 Podere Le Ripi Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Lupi e Sirene

Bought after tasting at the winery in the south east corner of Montalcino. Originally it was thought that there would not be much of a harvest because of the hot dry conditions but fortunately there was a small harvest and we were fortunate enough to taste it and buy some. This is 100% Sangiovese; it has bolder almost more emphasized flavors of fruit. Not more fruit it just lingers longer on the palate.
There is a bold cherry on the nose. On the palate it’s quite velvety with dark cherries, raspberry and a bit of mocha and a hint of almond. Medium tannins (I was surprised given its youth) and a long finish.
I wish we had bought more. This is the first bottle of a Marietta of Podere le Ripi wines that we. Right back with us. If you have not tried any of their wines I would highly recommend it.
Even better, if you get the chance, make an appointment for a winery tour and a tasting.
