  • 1995 Vieux Château Certan

Leathery, smoky nose, with redcurrant and plum. Lightly floral. Becomes meatier and reveals coffee and toffee after an hour. Some truffle after three hours. Palate features very ripe plum and black cherry, as well as a touch of earth. Lush mouthfeel. Still a hint of tannin to resolve. Medium-plus alcohol, medium acidity, and medium-length floral finish. Quite nice Pomerol at or near its peak.

  • 1998 Château Palmer

Takes two hours in the decanter to reach its potential. Very smoky and lightly sweet, as befits the Margaux appellation. Nose also reveals lovely aromas of black fruit, coffee, and purple flowers. Light truffle and spice after a few more hours. Palate is velvety and quite concentrated, with blackcurrant, plum, and smoke being the dominant notes. A touch gravelly. Medium alcohol and acidity. Quite a long finish. No hard edges. Not a blockbuster vintage but quite a lovely Palmer regardless. At or very near its peak. Tannins are fully resolved.

  • 2010 Domaine Fourrier Chambolle-Musigny Vieille Vigne

Some reduction on the nose blows off quickly to reveal lovely, slightly liqueur-like, strawberry fruit and Chambolle floral notes. As with many Fourrier wines, I might instinctively call this stemmy, but I know that Fourrier destems. Palate is sweet and extremely ripe but without feeling heavy or flabby. Fruity and a touch earthy with medium alcohol and acidity. Very accessible now but will probably become more subtle and sophisticated with a few more years as the fruit mellows.
