Decanted 30 minutes and served with burgers with blue cheese followed by cheddar. Very Bordeaux like and at the top league too. Lots of fruit with plenty of secondary and some tertiary aromas: dark fruit, pencil box, vanilla. Lovely on the palate: nice acidity, tannin, weight. Good medium to long finish. Went very well with a strong, mature cheddar cheese. At its peak now I think with another 5+ years left. I can’t believe I bought this from the Wine Society for just £12.95 11 years ago! Would easily beat many Bordeaux at 2-3x that price. It was well worth holding onto.

With mijotée de veau it was beautiful, seeming much younger than its 22 years. I think secret with perfectly mature Bordeaux like this is to have with gentle, slow-cooked meat like veal or something like beef bouguignon would also work well. Tends to be a little too mature for steak in my opinion. The tannins are normally in retreat but noticeable with the veal. Lots of pencil shavings and even lead, still some noticeable dark cassis fruit. A classic.

Tried after a 2012 Chambolle Musigny vieilles vignes (Magnien). The Burgundy was so much better. This is nice but seems thin with oak masking the lack of depth in the fruit. Nice flavours but oaky and thin in comparison with some unbalanced bitterness and sweetness. It also reminds me of a strawberry and cream candy.
