  • 2005 Clare Luce Abbey Cabernet Sauvignon Estate

We decanted for two hours and experienced strong blackberry, leather, and slight maple syrup scents on the nose. Upon palate-entry an immediately strong/smooth Chambord (raspberry) liquor-heat mellowed into a distinct espresso and Mexican bittersweet chocolate mid-palate. The Clare Luce mouthfeel redefines the "silky" adjective--that said, this cabernet has considerable structure, mild acidity, and the finest of tannins. The vanilla-creme finish expanded from 20-30 seconds over four hours. Balanced to the 3rd power!

  • 2001 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection

Double decanted for 1 1/2 hours. Its dark magenta color introduced intriguing grape Nehi soda, fenugreek/maple syrup, sweet tobacco, and slight fresh rosemary aromas. Lots of dark fruits appeared on the palate: black currant, black cherry, raspberry, and a tartness we attributed to boysenberry. The mid-palate-to-finish transition was marked by distinct black licorice and mellow cappuccino notes. This CSS was so smooth the fine grained tannins seemed to melt away into a thirty second finish. Although more medium-weight than later vintages, this 2001's mouthfeel was extremely silky and lush. This was our fifth anniversary wine (& '01 marks the year I proposed to my wife). Its overall balance and evolving qualities befitted our special occasion impeccably.

  • 2004 Rocca Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon

Let me preface by writing that Rocca's Syrah was one of the best of that varietal I've had in the past five years. We decanted their 2004 Cabernet for two hours and immediately noticed a lot of heat from the American oak. The cork was in perfect condition. The wine had a gorgeous garnet color and legs on the glass that informed this was going to be big. On the palate pleasant dark cherries gave way to unnervingly small doses of coffee and bittersweet chocolate. No secondary mid-palate dimensions, mocha, nor chocolate notes to speak of. The finish was extremely hot in the esophagus, short, and astringent. After two hours it opened up into a sweet one-dimensional plum wine. The most disappointing aspect for me was the light, as opposed to lush mouthfeel experienced by other CellarTrackers as well as Gary V. I was hoping for the ultimate QPR/Napa Cabernet and so I was expecting much more... this one was surprisingly disappointing.
