  • 2016 Château Branaire-Ducru

This is definitely a good wine, a very good wine. It has held up well so far. Its been 4 years since our last tasting. My wife's reactions are always the most reliable. I asked her what she thought, and she said, "Good." That's it. And, I had to ask. The flavors and aromas are not sharply defined, not focused. The word "muddy" keeps coming to mind. Will it become more defined (and refined) in the years to come? I do hope it does.

  • 2018 Château Sansonnet

Tasted the 2016 earlier this evening and thought this would be a good time to compare it with the 2018. The 2018 is dark red ruby. Beautiful color. Nearly opaque. Tart cherry in the nose. Layers. More complexity than the 2016. Not a beast. Initially thought this was more lean and narrow. As it is open longer, it develops into a smoother, softer, more complex wine. More enjoyable. My guess is this would appeal to a broader range of people than the 2016. As compared to the 2016, this is more like I have come to expect from Saint Emilion. Complex, balanced, smooth, just fruity enough, soft, smooth tannin. I really like this wine. When you consider the price, this is a bargain.

  • 2016 Château Sansonnet

A big wine. This has thrown significant sediment in the cellar these last 4-5 years. Dark red, opaque, brooding. Solid fruit. Puckered lips. Not a wine for everybody. This is a wine to spend some time with. Not what I expect from Saint-Émilion, but I like it. No sharp edges, nothing off putting. Black fruit dominant. Very good. Looking forward to the next visit with this wine in 3-6 months.
