  • 2019 Château Charmail

Disappointing compared to the magic of the vintage 2016, without speaking of the substantial price increase in between since its upgrade to Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel. Lighter on its feet (low TPI sensations and structure already resolved), less sapid (yeasty simple Cab, in the manner of the less pedigreed 2019 de Gironville tasted recently which is another Cab Sauvignon dominated Haut-Médoc) and aromatically less profound with a different signature (brownish sugar cane which reminds me of the 2016 Lanessan). RIP bygone excellent QPR.

  • 2020 Château Grand-Pontet

Generic and yeasty on the nose, the wine starts mouthwatering but flat with rustic flavors in the register of cold ashtray, almost cauliflower (coming from the 9% of Malbec?). Blind I would have bet on Castillon. Then the wine turns spicy with an overwhelming alcoholic finish. The tannic structure bores my craving for textures, and overall the wine lacks charm and purity of fruit. A poor QPR for me, especially from a wine whose price has inexplicably exploded since its recent buying by Clarence Dillon group. Do not count me among the fans. 89.5

Edit on day 3: a slight leafy expression of more noble fruits from the 25% of Cab Franc appears with discernable bramble. The wine has gained in definition with slow oxydation. I would therefore advise to let your bottles laying in your cellar for some time before popping a cork, or serve with an extensive decant if drunk such young. Revised verdict with an additional half point and, in spite of it all, a positive projection toward the future. 90

  • 2019 La Mauriane

Quite volatile on the nose with pronounced nail polish and spicy vanilla oak, with a hint of vinegary redcurrant in the background which fortunately brings elegance and raciness, and makes you want to have a sip of it. As expected the alcohol cannot hide in the mouth, but this is counterbalanced by pure red and black plums and fennel seed flavors which make it punch above its price point category. This is good and has the potential to become even better with more age. A hidden gem from lesser qualitative right bank terroirs unfairly shunned.
