  • 2010 Guy Bouvet Champagne Millésimé Brut

    DG 09/2020
Such a challenging vintage that not all producers overcame equally, this is the last vintage vinified by Antoine Bouvet's grandfather, Guy, and we already have tasted a couple of bottles that we found fantastic; this particular one was a little tighter and shyer, but enjoyable. Lots of ripe yellow apples dominate the aroma nd the flavour as in many other producer of the same area; peaches, apricots, raspberries and some black forest cherries; quince, guava, honey and mushrooms (but quite less perceptible than in the other bottles) from the long bottle ageing; violets and lavender; very discernible sea salt; with some air lactic notes of fresh and young cheese appeared as well as the honey and some baked peaches were more and more noticeable.
It was very enjoyable with a lovely and joyful acidity that assures a long and pleasant life for this cuvée made in an 'older' and more classic style than the rest of the range made by Antoine, but that we really enjoy. A wine that we would drink every day.

  • 2008 Olivier et Laëtitia Marteaux Champagne Millésimé Brut

We’d been quite curious to try one of the wines by these small producers from an oft-underrated region of the Champagne, which we personally enjoy a lot (based on experiences with other producers). We found this 2008 in a local store where they sell wine/gourmet products, and took the chance. We let it breathe for a while after opening since it was a little ‘reduced’, probably due to being an older disgorgement. When it began to breathe, the meunier grape was so dominant and present, very ripe: candied apples and other general candied fruits, a metallic touch, homemade plum cake with vanilla, freshly baked bread, and some honey; there were fresh white flowers, namely lilies, with a very intense (and characteristic in ‘older’ disgorgements) scent of old, dusty furniture; with more air, there was a sign of minerality, predominantly gunpowder.
We don’t know if it was this particular bottle, or the wine in general, but this bottle was probably ‘past its best’, which is to say that we enjoyed trying it, but it probably doesn’t have much more ageing potential; it showed as very ripe, mature, and needed quite a bit of air before it showed any signs of life. Drink now.

  • 2015 Huré Frères Champagne L'Inattendue Blanc de Blancs

    DG 10/2020
We really need to drink the Huré brothers’ wines more often because every time we revisit them we remember how much pleasure they offer us, in every state of their evolution. This particular bottle, despite being theoretically young, was extremely enjoyable. So much chalk oozed from the bottle ripe from the opening, with gunpowder, and a clear yet elegant oxidative base; it was ripe with fruit such as pears, pineapple, melon, ripe lemons, and grapefruit; aside from the fruit and general density, we also found some raw walnuts, a waxiness, and lots of white flowers.
We didn’t expect such a strong delivery from this bottle, but it was such a concentrated wine, with such strength and character; the style of these particular producers was also evident, and it’s clear that with time, this wine will go from strength to strength.
