  • 2020 Silvano Bolmida Langhe Nebbiolo Frales

    March 22, 24, & 28, 2024

Pale ruby with a tinge of orange near the rim.

This starts off with ripe red cherry and a floral character, followed by some tarry aromas. On the palate the fruit flavors are bold and ripe, but there is a nice dustiness that comes in. The wine is fresh with fine, tingly tannins. This is a lovely, delicate expression of nebbiolo.

Sealed with a Vacuvin and refrigerated between tastings.

Gorgeously aromatic, walking in a tropical orchard…tangerine, mango, floral. The palate echoes these flavors, plus some almond skin and salinity. The texture is creamy, yet there is ample acidity. Very nice on its own, but it went well with shrimp tacos and cauliflower romesco tacos.

An uncommon Italian varietal. It reminds me of Falanghina

  • 2015 Château Joanin Bécot

    March 15 & 17, 2024

This really opened up after 30 minutes in the decanter (decanted about ½ the bottle on the first night). Lots of plum and blackberry, damp underbrush, and caramel. On the palate, the bell pepper and espresso came out to play, some cherry Jolly Rancher on the finish. Easy to like, good with steak, medium acidity and body, well-integrated tannins, a little bit of heat on the backend. I sealed the wine with a Vacuvin and refrigerated it. On the second night it was still okay, but some mushroomy oxidized notes came through. I would say drink within the next 3-5 years.*

I was pleasantly surprised by the DIAM cork, but also surprised it was only a 5-year cork.

Reliable château for near- to mid-term drinking, lovely wine.

    75% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc

*There was a period of about 6 months when this was not stored in optimal conditions, some exposure to direct sunlight and variable temperatures.
