  • 2007 Castle Rock Pinot Noir Mendocino County

Update to my previous note: This bottle was much better than the last. Fuller, a little richer, definitely more fruit forward, and totally drinkable.

  • 2006 Big Basin Vineyards Syrah Fairview Ranch

This is just a superb syrah. As other tasters have noted, very rich layered, peppery, with just a hint of smoke on the tail. The fruit is big and bold without tipping any one aspect of the of the wine out of balance.

A bold and spicy smoked turkey chili with sweet corn, hominy, and ancho chili powder was the pairing of the night for this wine, and the crusty, warm notes of the soft bread served on the side pulled out the yeasty, earthy notes in the wine and pulled all the flavors together in the mouth.

Side note: Rattlesnake Rock is Big Basin's top-tier syrah. RR is much more expensive, and although excellent in its own right, I'd definitely say the Fairview is every bit as nuanced and complex--easily just as enjoyable, and at second or third tier ranking in the range, a far better value overall. It's just as ageworthy, and will probably astound just as mightily in 4 or 5 years, too. Buy this wine.

  • 2006 Conundrum Wines White Table Wine

I always look forward to a bottle of Conundrum. It's such a great food pairing wine, and tonight's pairing was no disappointment... spicy Asian food. I couldn't find a Reisling or a Gewurztraminer in the cellar today, but I knew this would do just great. Turned out to be a home run, with tasting notes consistent with many of the others here... but then Conundrum is consistently great for me.
