  • 2007 M. Chapoutier Côtes du Rhône Belleruche

Fresh and juicy, with good acidity and moderate, well-integrated tannins. Wild berries, scrub, pepper, with a touch of warming spices and a decently long finish (30 seconds or so) hinting of brine/sanguine notes. Great QPR at $12.99.

Drinking very well now. A friend brought over a bottle that had been aerated for about an hour. She said it had been tight at first, but by the time I had a glass it was showing ripe but not huge fruit, with nice earthy, leathery notes, well integrated tannins, and balancing acidity. Not earth-shattering, but a fantastic QPR for any amount under $20 and a very nice example of an understated Old World style.

  • 2006 Sanguis Novillero

Extracted, very full-bodied, quite rich, but also complex and balanced. Deep, dark berry fruit with warming spices, smoke, and bacon notes. Acidity gives freshness, ripe tannins provide grip, and both work beautifully to show off the depth and richness of the palate. This is a wine to come back to in 5 - 8 years, though it's drinking beautifully now (especially in Ohio, where these cold winter nights call for big, warming reds). If in that time all these elements (various flavors and aromas, perception of acidity and tannin) manage to integrate into a seamless whole--it's not seamless now, which explains my rating--then this score could go up.
