First experience with this producer. Disappointing. Already showing oxidation. Nose was fine, a little presence of white peach and coriander (??), so the oxy was a surprise. Short of medium bodied with some white flower, but the oxy was there and dominated from mid-palate onward.

This wine so seriously overperformed in several tastings in the last year that I went out and bought a case of the 2015. Hope it performs half as well. At this age wine has a has a pretty basic mixed berry nose with some plummy elements. Pretty crimson core with just a 1/4" edge fade and an inch of translucence around the rim. But most importantly the fruit is still there in spades. I won't try to give you six different taste elements -- they may have been there once but are now married into a sweet, glyceriney cherry and berry profile that just pleases the palate. It still has a nicely structured mouth feel; depth of round fruit and still with some voluption. I've never bought much of Magnien's wines because I am not a fruit forward Burghead, but I've loved a number of 2002's for their roundness and how they held their fruit and this one has to be a top value pick. This is better than a number of Grand Cru's that I have had from 2005 and later. God this is a nice wine -- two months ago it was perfect with roasted chicken and baked carrots -- tonight I decided to challenge it with a piece of andouille and a couple small stuffed peppers from the garden and it took the heat and still pleases the palate. $15 at Sam's 15 years ago; Guy's this is why you set aside a part of a cool basement so you can have wines like this that are otherwise no longer available, and then end up using the whole damn basement for your boxes. Still have 2 bottles left but they will be gone by this fall. Thank you, thank you Frederic.

A good choice for a Thanksgiving wine. Immediately very fragrant when opened with dark fruit swirls and cigar smoke character. Deep fruit intensity but not heavy on the palate. Very blackberry but not blueberry flavor with a certain decomposting sous bois and cigar tobacco character. A great match for the varied flavors of a Thanksgiving spread because the wine had such a "base" fruit mixture. But I do have to mark it down for lacking fruit complexity and lift in its profile. Nicely mature it was solid in the glass for more than an hour before retreating a bit. Expect it to hold for 3 to 5 years.
