  • 2006 Torbreck RunRig

Decanted 6 hours before drinking at my stepfather's 75th. Colour a clear youthful purple with some reddening at the margins. Nose of irish moss, blackberry and a touch of dried apricot from the viognier. Palate weighty and elegant. High alcohol not as noticeable as one might expect. Sweet black fruit - blackberry, boysenberry, blueberry and dark cherry. Very early secondary notes starting to come through in the form of charry barbecue meat, but still dominated by primary flavours. Long, unctuous finish with nice silky tannins. A seriously hedonistic wine and highly enjoyable. Good counterpoint to the far more cerebral Montrose 89. Don't think - drink!

  • 1989 Château Montrose

Opened for my stepfather's 75th birthday. Capsule and cork in great shape - last 10mm of cork wet, the rest like the day it was bottled. Wine level well into neck. Double decanted and allowed to come to room temperature over 2 hours. Wine a dark, plush garnet, immensely clear and vibrant. Nose a little funky at first, but resolved into a mixture of primary and secondary notes, oscillating between savoury Provençal/smoky/meaty overtones and almost jammy black fruit aromas. Palate reflected this - lovely juicy plum and blackberry up front giving way to savoury charcuterie and leather on the finish, which was long, long, long. A delightful wine and a pleasure to drink.

  • 2010 Château Ormes de Pez

Consumed over 3 nights. Medium red clear colour, nose of cranberry, red cherry and chalk dust. Palate of sour cherry, underripe plum and green peppers. Medium bodied - tight, tannic finish with moderate acidity. A little difficult right now - I suspect it will mellow somewhat over 2-3 years in the bottle, but not a long keeper I think. Good quaffer though.
