  • 2021 Union Wine Company Pinot Noir Underwood

Very light, but really pretty good. The nose has reduction behind the the caramel and sweet cherry candy. Light magenta color. Barely medium bodied. But, basically complete and balanced. Nicely integrated fruit, acid and alcohol. Nice lingering black cherry. Improves with a couple of swirls. Some ripe plum on the finish.

Not so good. Last time we ran across this Pinot was the 2010 vintage, and we tried to be diplomatic about what we discovered. This 2022 seems to have mostly the same characteristics, so we are assuming this is their desired style. We did review on day one, just to give Mother Nature a chance to bring some overnight air help. Just barely. It is really very thin. There is violets and crushed raspberries and plum, but not a lot. The color is a gorgeous magenta that light even for a Pinot. Not quite medium bodied. There is some tart cherry skin, black and maraschino cherry. It is really soft and kind of shy. But, the problem to me is just raw acid and tannins that kind of overpower everything. By day 2 the expanding marischino cherry is joined by some tangerine and considerably less influence from the raw stuff.

  • NV Union Wine Company Pinot Noir Underwood

We are learning not to be afraid of trying wine from the can. This is nothing special, but it is authentic. Really cute magenta color. Entry tastes much like a Mount Morency cherry. Easy on the palate. Integrated enough that everything works in harmony. Decent Pinot viscosity. Oregon style bright fruit.

When difficulty smiles upon us, we can oftentimes only smile back. I am glad to know that you are able to taste. Life, like wine, constitutes quite the journey. Kind regards.

12/6/2017 10:36:00 AM - I have seen but evidently not tried or reviewed the Outlander. Am a firm believer in Aldi and often run in just to grab a bottle or two. They are blue collar wine drinker heaven along with Trader Joe’s Glad you enjoy my reviews I take this task seriously

12/6/2017 9:41:00 AM - Hey Mike, great stuff, we enjoy your reviews. We were standing at Aldi to grab a few bottles to replace what we're pulling out for our holiday parties (unfortunately Aldi does not sell Penfolds) and reading some CT reviews and a few were from you! Anyway, one we have repeatedly bought and really enjoyed from Aldi, more than the score will ever say, is the Outlander Meritage. We do not see you had a tasting note on that one (maybe missed it in your 5000+ notes....) Have you ever tried that? And Noted on it? While we have not yet commented on CT about it, it'll probably score close to an 88-9 for us, but we flat out enjoy that wine as much as some of our 90+ reviews... Noroc
