8/7/2023 9:14:00 AM - Hi gilrbo, On the other issue you mentioned, I posted a couple of years ago (not sure where now) about the question of using the same numerical system whether one is talking about a Barolo, vs. a dolcetto. Someone could have two different rating systems for the traditionally simpler grape varieties vs. the grape varieties that can be very complex, I opted for keeping it simple by recognizing that for the most part a barbera or dolcetto (for example) will never attain the upper reaches of the 90's towards 100. But there are some rare times when such "simple" wines warranted a fantastic score -- when I've had a Bovio Barbera (especially from the 80's) or some rare dolcettos such as the 2006 San Fereolo 1593 Langhe Rosso, which was so stunning compared 99% of what we know of as very pleasing dolcettos.

8/7/2023 9:04:00 AM - Hi gilrbo. Now the puzzle for me is deeper -- unfortunately I can't include a screenshot to show you, but on Cellartracker screens (that I see) they say 85-90 is "very good to excellent" and 90-95 is "outstanding" and 96-100 is "extraordinary". That's the only reason I used the term outstanding. I was saying the barbera was on the low end of outstanding.

8/6/2023 5:47:00 AM - Gilrbo: Puzzled why you posted a comment on my note on the 2012 Rinaldi Barbera, which I said was 91 and outstanding. The definition of each range of values on the scale used on Cellartracker uses that exact word and is on screen every time one rates a wine. Sorry to hear you have an animus against the rating system, but I prefer that you be aware of the meaning of the numbers before commenting on my simple evaluation of this excellent Piemontese vintner's wine.

9/15/2017 9:11:00 AM - Hi Gilrbo, just wanted to drop you a note saying that I agree with your unease of the 100 scale rating. Although I use it (more for personal use and fun) I not only question the subtlety it purports but also the repeatability. I doubt that any palate is so objective as to reliably give the same number for the very same wine each time (also apart from bottle and age variations). But then, what's the point in the first place? I really appreciate your clear and concise notes that I can definitely relate to.

10/1/2016 3:58:00 AM - I would recommend that you let your 2001 Produttori's continue to sleep for the near future. The wine was fiercely tannic and didn't budge for about 3 hours. I don't understand some of the other notes based on my experience.

6/7/2015 4:55:00 AM - Tschou gilrbo, Freut mich von Dir zu lesen! Preferisci l'Italiano o Tedesco? Wegen weissem Burgund...

5/16/2014 11:26:00 AM - Thank you for commenting on my Faro note. It approaches $100 here in the US, when one can get it. My wife and I were in Piemonte last fall - what a wonderful place. We are both of Tuscan origin, and our wine salesman who sold us the Faro said we had to get rid of our "Tuscan skirts" and get up into the Piedmont. As much as I like Chianti and Brunello, I had to agree after experiencing Alba, Barolo and Barbaresco.

10/2/2013 4:40:00 AM - Ciao Sarastro, thanks for your comment. Much appreciated. Always good to have some feedback and see that one is not talking nonsense (big risk when the topic is wine!).

9/17/2013 1:48:00 PM - Hi gilrbo i was in a rush when i posted my comment about the Lafarge, i am usually more detailed. Wine is bright with medium tannin lovely subtle earth scent with raspberry and red cherry which just grow in intensity with very long finish. i never decant Burgundy unless lots of sediment. long life for this wine
