  • 2015 Littorai Pinot Noir The Pivot Vineyard

Lovely, elegant and nuanced. A nose of strawberries, cherries and black pepper. On the palate a medium bodied attack totally balanced between fruit and gentle fine grained tannin. Flavors of raspberry, black cherry and earth. Cohesive and together. 50-50 fruit and pepper/pencil/earth/tannin dancing together. Again just lovely.

  • 2016 Rhys Pinot Noir Horseshoe Vineyard

This is quite a bit different from the “usual” Pinot we drink around here. It doesn’t have the depth of fruit of Rivers Marie, and it’s certainly not as Burgundian as Kutch or Littorai. It’s its own man, and I say man because my wife immediately remarked what a masculine wine this is. And I tend to agree.

On the nose, a cured meat, leather, and pepper edge leads the way. Others have called it weed or gaminess. It reminded me a bit of the Cayuse signature cured meat approach on the nose. It’s sharp, attractive, and announces itself with authority.

On the palate, the fruit takes a bit of a back seat at this early stage to pepper, minerals, and an interesting salinity. The fruit comes second, but it enters forcefully and with interest, and sticks around a while. Interestingly, the fruit is balanced with some acid and lift. There’s a long finish of dark red and black fruit here, along with some black spice and forest floor.

Really nice. And as I think about it, I don’t really have anything else like this in my cellar, besides, well, other Rhys Horseshoe Pinots!

  • 2016 Kutch Chardonnay Sonoma Coast

I think this is one of the best values not just in California Chardonnay but in ALL wines. An absolutely exceptional old world style Chard full of energy, lift and enthusiasm. Citrus of lemon and grapefruit leads the charge balanced beautifully with light rocks and minerals. It SPARKLES (and not with bubbles, but with vibrance). Just gorgeous. Stays great into the second day in the fridge. In my cellar, along with some of the Rivers Marie pinots we buy, this is at the very top of the QPR scale.
