2021 MacDonald Cabernet Sauvignon
4/21/2024 - #1Winelover Likes this wine: 98 Points
Tasted with Alex and CTer friend AGelvis on a cold rainy day. That's okay as it was an incredible experience nonetheless. We walked the vineyards in the rain and learned about the history of Macdonald, Detert and To-Kalon in general, including the famed handshake between Robert Mondavi and Alex' family. Alex had a bottle ready for us which was double decanted for lots of hours.
The 2021 version is typical Macdonald; very dark purple black with strong tannins. Fruits are blackberries and blueberries. I also tasted olives, iron and a little tar. It's a massive wine and quite frankly, hard to score because it's solely based on potential. Luckily, I have been collecting for a while so I understand what this will end up tasting like in 5-10 years.
The tasting went so well, we were able to talk Alex into grabbing another bottle :). That was a PnP but we held our own and drank what was generously poured. It was great to watch AGelvis' first Macdonald experience. I know it won't be his last!
Macdonald is one of my favorite wines year in and year out.

2021 Realm Cellars Farella Vineyard
4/21/2024 - #1Winelover Likes this wine: 97 Points
I couldn't wait to try this as Realm's version of Farella is 100%. The label even got an upgrade! I don't usually comment on labels and unlike most, I prefer old school labels. That said, the artwork is very cool. Now onto the vino...
Like usual, very dark purple and black with strong smells. Blackberries, blueberries and plum. It starts off rich and creamy with vanilla notes and then the mineral attacks you in the middle and throughout the finish. The finish includes blackberry dark chocolate (think Kiva). Tannins are pronounced and need time -- either with a healthy decant or an aerator.
This is not really ready as of now. I tried a 1/2 glass from PnP and it tasted more like a barrel sample than the finished product. After 4 hours of decanting it and then pouring it through an aerator for the 1st glass, it was just awesome!
97+ with upside. I can only imagine what this will taste like in 3-5 years.

2021 Wallis Family Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Denali Estate Vineyard
4/10/2024 - #1Winelover Likes this wine: 96 Points
This is a placeholder as I only had a 1/2 glass last night. I plan to open the bottle tonight for the full experience.
Dark purple black in the glass with strong smells. Fruits of blackberry, either currants or plum with blackberry pie. Tons of chocolate and mineral notes. I think that my score will go higher and not lower. We shall see. It needs a nice decant as well!
