  • 1990 Louis Jadot Beaune 1er Cru Avaux

Drinking very nicely, but very thin and angular when opened. Didn't decant but poured a glass out and let it sit, and it was much better after 2 hours or so. Next day even better, so give this a good airing.

A pleasingly funky wine. Not one for those who prefer laser-like purity. Delightful nose. No sharp edges, good balance and structure.

Finishes a bit short. Still an impressive effort,

  • 1986 Château Léoville Barton

    A Chateau I don't love, in a vintage I loathe. But I can never resist a bargain.

Actually, this isn't too bad. Really gorgeous classical nose of cedar and bramble. Musty, but in a pleasing way. A dab of mint and soy sauce.

Unfortunately as usual with 1986 the taste is where it all goes wrong. Feels like a great wine with an unpleasant layer of bitterness and harsh tannin over the top. This isn't the worst example of the vintage though- it's a good wine underneath, but its potential will never really be unlocked.

Don't be fooled into thinking these '86s will improve. The wine will die underneath that layer of tannin. Drink now.

  • 1989 Château Mouton Rothschild

Excellent fill on this bottle. Poured a half glass and left the rest to sit in the bottle for a few hours. Maybe decanting would have been a better idea but in the end it opened up.

Let's not mess around. This is an absolutely superb wine.

Lovely nose, for sure. Blackberry, mint and cedar; very classically Pauillac. But Mouton isn't a hugely layered wine in my experience, unlike Margaux for example. It doesn't have the power of Latour, or the sleekness of Lafite either.

Mouton's superpower- in a great year- is balance in the mouth. Utterly impeccable perfect balance. The flavor and the sweetness and the acidity and the tannin are so magnificently poised. Concentrated but never overbearing. So much energy. The texture is silken but grippy, with a finish that pulls you back for another taste.

And then suddenly before you know it the bottle is gone. Amazing that they made this in '89 and followed it with such a lifeless '90. Unfortunately consistency definitely isn't their superpower.

Drink or hold for another decade or so.
