1975 Château La Croix de Gay

Great bottle condition. Nose of dark plum, dark cherry, Katsuo, barnyard. Fruits are still alive on the palate which is just as well since you can’t escape those 1975 tannins. Popped and poured this which was a great decision - it fell away after an hour but was still a joy to drink for the 3 hours or so of dinner. Overall, I’m a big fan of 75s - you I’ll get some dried out bruisers but the tannins maximize your chances of finding wines still alive at levels.

2017 Tasca D'Almerita Sicilia Diamante d'Almerita Passito

Fantastic nose combining sweet and savory characters. Ruby grapefruit, orange peel, macadamia, water melon, parsley, cucumber. On the palate, an orange marmalade and honey character. Lovely acidity on the finish although a little too sweet for my tastes

2012 Il Poggione (Proprietá Franceschi) Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Paganelli

Dark cherry, raisin, black liqorice, bark, forest floor. Intense, concentrated fruits up front. Soft, velvety tannin and juicy acidity. Some sinewy heat from the alcohol in the finish. At first, I saw no reason why this is double the price of the normale but I can now understand. The quality and concentration of the fruit, the quality of the tannin, and the overall balance are superior. However, I still think it’s only marginal gains vs. the normale which therefore means this wine misses the point of Il Poggione as one of the great values in the wine world.
