2001 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape
5/24/2017 - dawgdaze Likes this wine: 93 Points
A blend of 30% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah, 10% Counoise, and the balance split among the other permitted varietals of the appellation.
Friends came to our house for a dinner on the patio overlooking the Pacific. This was the first experiment with Chateau Beaucastel. We had two bottles of the 2001.
Decanted for 6 hours.
Color: Inky, ruby.
Aroma: dark cherries, plums and blackberries.
Palate: Smoked meats, prune, earth and mineral, with hints of truffles.
The vintage was very light like a Pinot Noir showing very well. Hard to believe it is 16 years old. I wish I had two more bottles cellared. It was enjoyed by all!

2007 Cayuse Syrah En Chamberlin Vineyard
5/13/2017 - dawgdaze Likes this wine: 96 Points
2006 Syrah En Chamberlin was my first wine from Cayuse. I purchased it in October 2008. My first bottle from that 3 Pack was opened in 2010. The only thing I remember about it was it tasted young. The second bottle was opened in 2012 and it was still too young. My last bottle was opened in 2014 at eight years old. The same thing occurred. What would it take for this wine to come into its own?
With my 2007 En Chamberlin I wasn’t going to waste my time with anything under a decade! I don’t know when it happened but between nine or ten years it blossomed into the most gorgeous Syrah that I’ve ever had, pure silk. This definitely had that WOW factor!
Decanter for 3 hours.
Color: Deep garnet purple.
Aroma: Smoked meat, espresso, violets and trademark Cayuse funk.
Palate: Iron minerals, olives tapenade, beats and blueberries.
This was worth the wait. My personal feeling is that you have to be patient with Cayuse El Chamberlin and give it time to mature and with the next decade, it will keep evolving. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was still drinkable for three decades.
