  • 2016 Château Malescot St. Exupéry

I know this is early, but I wanted to try it as I only have 1 bottle. Decanted for 2 hours. Great bottle of wine. I don't drink a lot of Margaux and this was pleasantly surprising for me. Tons of soil in the mid palate and the fruit was very present also. Shared blind with my somm buddy called out 'sneaky oak' after tried the wine with food. I thought that was a good comment as there is a lot of tannin at the end is probably masking the oak. If you have a few bottles of this, I think it's fun to try it a bit early and assess the wine. I liked it and just purchased some more tonight.

I'll go with the crowd on the rating. 93. Cheers.

Quality Napa cab enjoyed over a fantastic dinner. I have 2 more bottles that I’ll save for a meal with friends given how well the bottle was received.

  • 2013 Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon Backus Vineyard

NR - Purchased recently from KL recently when they were selling a number of past vintages. Opened D1 with 3 hours of decanting. Tried the wine on opening and immediately regretted opening the bottle. It's too early to open this wine. Drank half of the bottle D1 with my somm buddy. Lots of tannins. Definitely high quality and got some 'maple syrup'. D2: settled down a bit. mix berry syrup and some vanilla with the oak. Again, too early to enjoy in my opinion.

Small side note: our brown bag included an '82 3 Palms and an '12 Pape Clement. Palms was excellent and Pape was excellent D2.

I have at least one of every Backus vintage going back to 1997 and I've only opened the 2004. Wait 20 on these. There are not many opportunities to enjoy and the wine needs to integrate.

    Cheers.

1/18/2023 6:21:00 PM - 1/23 could work. The Cafe at the Cantor Museum at Stanford is excellent and there is easy parking usually. I have a 2pm meeting in downtown PA.

1/17/2023 12:56:00 PM - No problem on response time! I’m not in the S. Bay often, so getting down for coffee may be difficult (although I’d make a special trip for a wine tasting). I am on campus at Stanford from time to time. I’ll be there in the latter part of the afternoon next Monday (1/23) and could likely meet for coffee there (I think that there’s a small restaurant/coffeehouse across from the children’s hospital) +/- 3 pm. Otherwise, next time you’re in SF or when you have a tasting going on. One way or another, we’ll find a way.

11/14/2022 6:03:00 PM - Becot is always amazing in the great vintages. I find it just as good as CanonlG and Larcis Ducasse. SFWinelover said you moved?

1/14/2021 7:07:00 PM - Have fun in SoCal if you go. I’ve never been there, I discovered it after I moved to Co. Another great Wine Shop close to Laguna is Hi Times Cellars in Costa Mesa. They have a cool walk in cellar set up. Have fun.

9/29/2020 3:45:00 PM - Yes. I'm a big Paloma fan (Spring Mtn) and Sheldon said he expects the winery is a complete loss. Difficult times. BTW, followed you and Michigan Dogs because I'm a native Detroiter. Went to U of D High and grew up in Rochester/Bloomfield.
