7/17/2023 7:43:00 AM - Hi Goldstone, Stumbled onto your profile looking at some recent Dominus reports and I discovered that we have similar tastes and, more importantly, we’re both in Hong Kong. Do you attend many tastings in HK? Always on the lookout… Be back in August. Cheers!

7/29/2022 12:46:00 PM - My Dear Goldstone, Thank you for your kind (non-obdurate!) note on my just-posted review of the '82 Leoville las Cases. In briefly scanning your activity here, I am both impressed by and envious of your oenological adventures! Again, many thanks and kindest regards. Sincerely, DrDan

7/22/2020 10:43:00 AM - Thx for the message. Regarding your decanting question: i guess beside the logistics (with 20+ magnums), it’s a philosophical question wether to decant or not. I do it religiously but other say that in a larger tasting you don’t do it to capture how it is without decanting, to just get a pure undecanted picture of the wine as it is anyhow just to browse through the wines to get an overview and glimpse. I would prefer it otherwise.

1/24/2018 1:14:00 AM - Hey Grapeomad, I see where you are coming from. I have sensed a slightly different style in Ch Musar since around 2001-2002, when Marc Hochar and his cousin started to influence Serge's old-school approach and that may be the cuse of the inconsistency. The solution is to fall back on the superb and still not very expensive 1999, methinks. Mike

1/23/2018 11:04:00 PM - Hi Mike, regarding the Chateau Musar, I understand what you are getting at, but I like to divide my wines on two categories - the ones that are delicious for a good price and those that are not. I admired Musar since the beginning of my career, but sometimes I just avoid some vintages because I think they are not worth my money (and I am all for natural wines, btw).

11/24/2017 10:54:00 PM - Hey Goldstone, regarding the Pontet-Canet, I tried 2010 and 2006 in the tasting, blew me away far more than the 2008.

4/17/2017 6:40:00 AM - Hi Mike, Thanks for the message, not sure how the message boards work so posting in mine and your's. I've cut down a lot on drinking wine over the last couple of years as I've become more sport focused but still buy some every now and again and more occasionally drink some of the nicer stuff. And yes, I did buy some old Rioja from the UK recently - always worth a punt in my view when odd and interesting bottles pop up. Do you get up to Crown a lot I'd like to make more TNC but always seem to be away travelling with work when Greg hosts them. Maybe we can meet at one in May or June Best, Paul

3/1/2015 11:56:00 PM - very nice locations! Do you ever come to Houston? That is where I am at.

1/10/2015 10:44:00 AM - Hi Mike, thanks for your note. I have been drinking a lot of Musar recently, but nothing older than the '95, which I enjoyed a lot so I will keep an eye out for older stuff at reasonable prices. It seems we share some tastes and I recently purchased some '82 La Rioja Alta 890 based on your notes here. Cheers, Ted

4/26/2014 1:25:00 PM - Harley, that's a new one on me and I'll certainly try and track it down in Hong Kong. If you have an address of a supplier elsewhere, that would be fantastic. Cheers!

  • Harley1199 says:

4/26/2014 11:57:00 AM - Oh I know that winery perfectly well. May I recommend Rafael Palacios As Sortes? That white needs a few years cellaring then repaying more than many Grand Cru from Burgundy. If you're interested, I can give you some interesting addresses but no idea if they're sold on HK, sorry Cheers!

12/30/2013 6:54:00 AM - Hi Mike, thanks for suggesting another restaurant, we should be back in HK before the end of january so I will definetly give it a try. In the meanwhile I hope you had a great Christmas and I wish you a very happy and prosperous 2014! Best. Andy

12/22/2013 8:46:00 AM - Hi Mike, a great thank you again for the restaurant list. Really enjoyed Tim Ho Wan and also Lung King Hee at the 4 Seasons. We also discovered the Chairman restaurant which I seriously recommend, although I have a feeling you probably know it! By the way, I had a bottle of the 1985 Mas de Daumas Gassac at lunch a couple of days ago, slendid ruby colour, great wine which only seems to improve with age. Merry Christmas and a great 2014 to you. We will return to HK for a few days on the way to the Philippines in late january and will try more restaurants from your list. Best. Andy

11/13/2013 10:16:00 AM - Hi Mike, firmed up my HK trip. Will arrive on the 24th and stay for a week. Would be really grateful if you could suggest e few chinese restaurants not so frequented by tourists but loved by the locals. Thanks in advance. Andy

  • Goldstone says:

11/3/2013 3:40:00 PM - Hi Andy, let me know when your trip to HK is confirmed and I'll be delighted to recommend a few places. Cheers, Mike

11/3/2013 8:17:00 AM - Hi Goldstone, thanks for the tip on decating the Musar, will try it next time. I see you are a fan of Mas de Daumas Gassac, I was fortunate to buy and still have a few of 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990 plus a few late 1990's and 2000 vintages. The 1985 is amazing! Will probably be in HK towards the end of this month, might ask you for a few great local restaurants if you don't mind. Best. Andy

11/2/2013 1:14:00 AM - Hi Mike, happy to meet you too. Great to hear that you're familiar with Turkey and its indigenous grapes and local wines. Would love to further exchange thoughts and tastes on that. Ct. Musar is an interesting story. I bought 3 bottles of its 2002 vintage, consumed one of them and cellaring the other two. Sure it was wild and not a wine for mainstream drinkers. I reckon 2002 is not their best vintage and I believe i'll have to wait at least 5 years before enjoying them in their full maturity and complexity. I'll try to hold on to a bottle of 99 following your advice. Talk to you soon. Cheers, Ercument

10/11/2013 8:39:00 AM - Hi Eublos, not the 1994....the only Mas de Gassac older than the 1996 I've drank is the 1987. That was 20 months ago and the wine was surprisingly youthful....much more so than the 1996 is today.

10/11/2013 5:56:00 AM - Hi Mike, thanks for your comment on 96 Gassac. Have you ever had the 94 ? Best Regards

9/21/2013 12:15:00 AM - Hi Mike... Thanks for your comments on my '99 musar notes. My case is actually 24x37.5 so maybe slightly more developed but it is a stunning wine. Given your comments I might buy a case of magnums to stick in the cellar for the long haul. Are there any other musar vintages you strongly recommend? Regards, Jamie

5/24/2013 11:25:00 AM - Mike, not sure how this works, I've never posted before, so I hope you get this message. I'm responding to your note about my comments on the '89 Cometesse. I do love and enjoy older Bordeaux. This past week my group (of 4) went to BYOB in Montreal and consumed some very fine wine - a '79 and 95 'Palmer, '89 Las Cases, '90 Pichon Baron, '90 Chateau Margaux. It was a fine evening. Wine of the night (blind) was the Margaux. Most surprising wine was the '89 Las Cases (so subtle and smooth that just kept getting better in the glass). Most pleased that the '79 Palmer is still kicking butt (big time!). And I love the Pichon Baron - I find it is one of the most unique Bordeaux's with tremendous value (I love the capsicum / green pepper that many find overbearing).

4/23/2013 1:26:00 PM - Blimey, Mike, you were quick to spot my LB placeholder. In the event, the wine was superb, as were the others. I now need the rest of the week to recover. Cheers!

4/19/2013 1:06:00 AM - by the way, Musar '99 is as old as I have ever tasted, and am too curious of those from older vintages... they must be fantastic!... Though I have magnum '98, which was a gift for our wedding year from a friend. Cheers, SW

12/21/2012 7:48:00 AM - Hmmm...what to open with a farm-raised French Turkey on Christmas Day lunch? As the Turkey has (er, had.....) lived its life running around in French wooded farmlands it is more "gamey" than your regular bird. I'm thinking about a 1997 Louis Jadot Chassagne-Miontrachet followed by a 1982 Ch. Branaire Ducru. I'm guessing that both should be in their optimal drinking window.....which is what Christmas lunch should be about. The Ch. Branaire Ducru should also follow on well with the St. Nectaire and Epoisses cheeses we have for the finale. Gosh, I'd forgotten about a Christmas Pudding! Merry Christmas to everyone.....
