  • 2019 Bodegas El Nido Jumilla Corteo

This wine is part of the El Nido project, where Australian winemaker Chris Ringland makes amazing wine using fruit from Juan Gil Family Estates Jumilla vineyards. Clio is the best known of the three wines made here.
Corteo is a Syrah only made in exceptional years. I have been lucky to find it three times - first in a California auction, then two years later in a butcher shop in Moscow, then finally in a New Jersey wine store. It's noticeably cheaper than Chris Ringland's high end Australian Shirazes

Incredible nose black fruit, spicy, bright. Palate is huge fruit, smooth, long finish with lots of tannins and great acidity. It reminded me of a heavier Carnival of Love with more acidity. I really enjoyed this and would like to compare alongside the El Nido Cabernet/Monastrell blend.

vanilla, vanilla all the way. This is fruit-forward with blackcurrant, blackberry, milk chocolate on palate, soft tannins, not as acidic as I think I'd like. I've enjoyed this wine for a decade - it's not for everyone but consistent for me.

  • 2021 Gál Tibor TI TI Egri Csillag

Very pale straw even watery looking. Complex nose with peach, lemon, apple, pear, and hint of flowers. Palate is clean, juicy, great acidity. I've enjoyed this as an aperitif and with food. It's a delicious alternative to a Pinot Blanc from Alto Adige or to a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. For me the appeal is all about balance - lots of fruit, super drinkable and clean mineral on the back-end. It's a white wine that I havent got bored with and great value for $18 at my local wine store.

For the wine nerds, this is described as a Hungarian field blend of Királyleányka, Szürkebarát (Pinot Gris), Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Blanc, Tramini (Gewürztraminer), and Zeni.

3/29/2021 5:21:00 PM - alohashirt, thanks for the thoughtful comment. I have had the Scott, Laberinto and one of the others you mentioned, and I agree, they are good. I can usually find the Joel Gott SB for $9 or so at my Costco. I don't know how he does it either!

3/2/2018 8:33:00 AM - I like the Can Blau and Atalaya, which are part of this family. I have a theory that folk who like Juan Gil are part of the 30% or so of wine lovers who enjoy fruit forward wines, but that everyone's palate has a "sweetness cliff" or maximum subjective fruitiness they can enjoy after which wines because cloying and unpleasant. I also enjoy Venge's Scout's Honor, and most of the Mollydooker reds. Closer to that cliff, for me are Orin Swift's Abstract, Martinelli Zinfandel. Just over the cliff is Rombauer Zinfandel, and I cant swallow Yellowtail, Apothic or similar. But the Rombauer has been very popular at dinner parties and some folk have mistaken it for a far more expensive Napa red.

3/2/2018 3:57:00 AM - You could also look at the extended family of Juan Gil wines for your party. Rejon is a beautiful tempranillo from Bodegas Tridente/Triton. Also Bodegas Atalaya have 2 gorgeous wines at the bottom and top end of the price spectrum, La Atalaya del Camino and Alaya Tierra. If you are a 12 Meses and 18 Meses fan, these will be right up your alley. Good Luck with the party.
