  • 2014 Chapel Down Chardonnay Kit's Coty Estate Blanc de blanc

The last time I had a UK sparkler was a few years ago, but after watching the 60 Minutes segment on wine and climate change I thought I'd give it another shot. The LCBO only has a few to choose from, and this one seemed to be the best reviewed.

It's a decent enough sparkling BdB with some autolytic notes, citrus, and a creamy mouthfeel. Nice balance. Everything is in the right place. But it's also generic. It doesn't have the depth, complexity or character of many similarly priced Champagnes.

Is that because the vines are so young? The difference in soil/chalk? Winemaking skill? Will this improve with bottle age?

I'm don't know the answer, but as it stands right now I can think of quite a few entry level Champagnes (Pierre Moncuit Hugues de Coulmet, Laherte Freres Ultradition, etc.) or sparkling wines from countries like South Africa (Graham Beck Brut Zero) and Spain (anything from Recaredo) that I prefer to this... and at less than a third of the price.

  • 2018 de Négoce Cabernet Sauvignon OG N.43

Decanted for 4 hours prior to drinking. A high quality Napa valley Cab Sauv - primarily Oakville fruit - that’s well balanced and structured for mid to long term cellaring. At the moment it shows a mix of blue and tangy black fruit, all nicely controlled and not overblown, overripe or dense. The fruit is balanced very well with a solid hit of acidity and fine grained tannins. Some old school Napa winemaking on display here.

I would have preferred more black fruit than blue, but that’s just a personal preference. This is drinking beautifully with a few hours in the decanter, and I would think that it’ll age well for half a dozen years at minimum.

  • 2010 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Bougros

Still drinking well, although more evolved (but not advanced) than last time. Poached pear (don’t recall that with previous bottles!), lemon, lime, oyster liquor, and some buttery roundness, while maintaining its medium acidity.

10/3/2018 8:23:00 PM - Sunny...I do formally apologize, I hope you can forgive. Humans will tangle and fight, and it brings out sometimes needed and sometimes unnecessary results/information. I hope our debacle has helped more than hurt CT, as you did spit some truly great knowledge/drink-ability info about that wine of which we tangled. I have found that once the air is cleared or just some time passed there is a chance to become closer and friendly, or to keep a grudge. I choose friendship. Your experience to CT is invaluable. Peace and love, cheers!

6/21/2014 8:23:00 AM - Sunnylea57, You may be right on the Dunn. However I just bought this and it may not have been stored properly. I should have noted that. However, most reviews of the 03 indicate that vintage does not last quite as long as many other vintages of Dunn. I'll take your advice and hold some of the others for a few years and see what develops. Thanks for your comment.
