2001 R. López de Heredia Rioja Gran Reserva Viña Tondonia
2/11/2024 - streethawk Likes this wine:
Absolutely special, almost ethereal expression of Rioja. So finessed, so beautiful. Gentle tannins on the finish. This has a long way to go and should make lovely old(er) bones - history in a bottle. Singular, emotional wine - wow!
I will conclude this note by noting that a Gran Reserva designation from López de Heredía is extraordinarily rare - occurring less than 30 times since 1890 - and is reserved for only the very best expressions of their terroir. You can generally expect a more “traditional” style of Rioja from this bodega where elegance is preferred over the sheer power and massive oak influence seen in some of the more modern styles of Rioja.

2007 Paolo Scavino Barolo Bric dël Fiasc

Fourth of my 4 bottles. Crimson with an orange tinge at the edges. Decanted for sediment into an old wine decanter, but rather muted when first opened. With a little bit of air, a wonderful perfume of roses, tar, mineral, and cherries. On the palate, there is still a bit of tannic grip. Great length. Very attractive savoury quality to this wine. Beautiful expression of Barolo.

2005 Antinori Tignanello

Decanted for sediment in an old wine decanter. Drinking beautifully right now with notes of earth, black tea, leather, herbs, dried cherries. Medium bodied with impressive depth. Not the most muscular vintage of Tig but highly enjoyable if you like this style. I wouldn’t wait much longer to drink these.
