This is around the mark for the price. Attractive cedar, cassis and bay leaf on the nose; medium-plus bodied and slightly plump, the high Merlot content is quite prominent, still with some chunky tannins. 90-91 point range and serviceable.

This lovely Hunter Valley Semillon has started to develop the classic HVS tertiary characters, with deep mineral, toasted brioche and honeysuckle notes. Medium-bodied, great persistence, soft lime acidity. It's quite generous at the moment, and I think this can be comfortably broached now and the next 7-10 years - doesn't need the cellar time of a Vat 1 from the classic years.

Didn't take any formal notes, but impression was of a typical Australian quaffing Pinot Noir. It will do the service as a lighter wine, but don't think there is anything more profound within this one.

12/7/2022 3:08:00 AM - Lightning, you bugger, you left me nowhere to go but to the emotional stuff, because you said it all in terms of the wine as wine! Great review. I bought 6, they are probably going to outlive me and, generally, I don't buy Chardonnay for the cellar. Love your work, keep it up.
10/12/2022 2:37:00 PM - Appreciate the very generous feedback, comrade. I see you like John Wade's work - wasn't he a true master? It is a comment on how fickle I can be and how emotion plays a significant role in wine, that I really struggled to stay with Howard Park after he moved on. I have to have another crack. Any thoughts on HP in the post-Wade era?
