  • 2016 François Chidaine Vouvray Clos Baudoin

Totally intoxicating. Quince, apple, sweet citrus, mushrooms, hazelnut husks, honey, innumerable spicy and floral nuances. This has that beautiful dessicated meadow smell, just lovely. Thick and fresh at once. Grippy, full and textured, electrifying acidity, rich fruit, complex floral and earthy flavors are beguiling. Super long finish, a little tannic, beautiful acid structure, this is great dry Chenin. It should develop for another 5 years, at least. I've heard reports of oxidative Chidaine that has not held up well. I don't think this wine will go that direction.

Bright color, purple and magenta. Smokey and dusty, quite reductive at first, but it opens up. Struck match, sea muck, vegetable ash, red plum, blood orange, rosehips and white pepper. Juicy on the palate, pure fruit roars through the earthy ruckus. Medium-bodied, with bright acids and a low level of rather coarse tannins. Amazing finish, it positively bristles with notions of rocks and plants, but tart fruit keeps right up. This is cool stuff. Definitely the best Listan Prieto (aka Mission, Pais) I've ever tasted. Also the best Canary Islands wine I can remember. Dunno if I would save this, as I'm not sure reduction like this resolves well in the bottle with red wines, and this is so much fun right now. Who knows though. I would, in any case, do a hard decant next time, or drink it over two or three days.

Gassy and reductive. Needs to open up. Aromas of lime and lemon juice, white peach, green apple, white flowers and herbs. A touch of sea breeze and struck flint remain even after the stronger reductive elements blow off. Very light, zippy and fresh. Lots of cut and verve, finishing with strong citrus and a chalky mineral character. Nice stuff. Hardly notice the rs, this is very close to dry.
