  • 2020 Dureuil-Janthial Rully Maizières Blanc

This might be a 6yo village wine, but it was barely getting going really - still tight and a little bit reductive. There's plenty of concentrated lemony fruit, texture from the dry extract, and excellent balance, with all its elements beautifully meshed together. Lovely with quiche Provencale and then roast chicken.

100% Chardonnay, Disgorged July 2022. Pale straw. It's more austere than I usually drink, although I can see the appeal - and Mrs A liked it quite a bit. Spearmint on the powdery, ineffable nose, which smells sweeter than the wine actually tastes. It's gently marine in character on the palate, and there's the beginnings of autolytic development on the finish too. Not a problem to finish the bottle, but I'd probably have been happier with a single glass.

  • 2019 Bernard Levet Côte-Rôtie Améthyste

Youthful but by no means unwelcoming. Dark in colour and aspect, with notes of cedar, pepper, leather and (especially) concentrated blue fruit. The finish is salty and relatively long. It's a sultry evening and the wine started at too high a temperature, but even taking that into account I still think there was evidence of the warm vintage and the consequent lack of optimal lift and definition. Still tasty and pleasurable though.
