  • 2020 DuMOL Pinot Noir DuMOL Estate Vineyard

Edgy and fresh in all the right ways. Caramel and broad red fruits on the nose, followed by tart strawberry and wild cherry on the palate. I get that signature green tea note at the back end. I don't think there's any metal or mineral here; it's almost all fruit. It's got a lovely prickly texture all the way from the front of the tongue to the back of the throat. Judging by tonight's tasting, the drinking window is open, even if -- or especially because -- the elbows are still sharp.

  • 2020 DuMOL Pinot Noir MacIntyre Estate Vineyard

Pretty dark, thick, and structured as DuMOL Pinots go, and that's a nice result here. Black licorice, red berries, "weed," and other green herbs mix well throughout. Despite the heft, it's not at all lazy; the buzzy acid makes it jump right off the tongue. To me, it's in the mold of the DuMOL Finn, which is one of my favorite Pinots. And it's an ideal autumn wine.

  • 2019 DuMOL Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard

I'm rarely disappointed with a DuMOL Chardonnay or Pinot, but this is one of those times. There's just so much unabashed iron or mineral at first that it's hard not to be put off of the first glass. Air time solves some of that -- and I'm sure cellar time would help, too -- but I never fully get past the hardware-store flavor profile to reach the citrusy fruit underneath. Texture-wise, I like the oily mouthfeel. And I get that this is an old-school, cool-weather, Chablis-like Chardonnay. For me, though, the experience is more appreciation than enjoyment.
