Wow - the nose hits you as soon as the cork is out of the bottle. Raspberry, leather, mushrooms, cocoa, and just the right amount of "garden shed". Pinch of sediment, deep red in color. Palate is plum, blueberry, chocolate and baking spice. This is firing on all cylinders and is barely out of the bottle! It only got better after a few hours of decanting. Quite enjoyable.

  • 2010 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande

Deep reddish-brown, translucent, minimal sediment. Nose is bright and spicy - cloves, violets, tea. Quite balanced, predominant impression of fruit with acid and tannin well behind. Out of the bottle dark cherry, cola, baking spices, good length. Quite drinkable right out of the bottle.

After 4h of decanting it has developed a little. It's on the fruit-forward end for Pauillacs, lively and delicious. The finish is beginning to show interesting notes of coffee and chocolate and the signature Pauillac "funk" is on display. Rich, fresh and well crafted, a real pleasure to drink.

Out of the bottle the color is red with a pronounced brown tinge. The nose is initially youthful (flowers, fruit) but after a few minutes it shows its age - port, earth, balsalmic. On the palate tannins are fully integrated and the wine is showing clear tertiary characteristics. Good length with a pleasant finish, tastes like it's "in the zone". Enjoying this right out of the bottle doesn't seem like a crazy idea.

After 4h the wine was pretty much in the same place, but an overnight ox really enhanced the elegant features of this glass. This is a classic Bdx profile (port, earth, ...) but the unique character of this wine is what I can only describe as "tobacco": peppery, smoky, full, smooth and rich.

I don't feel like it's holding much back at this point. There's no rush, but if you have bottles, now's a great time to enjoy them. Cheers!
