After a 45 minute decant, stewed prunes in the nose was a terrific disappointment. Was this bottle a victim of its hot vintage? But after what just seemed like a few minutes, I noticed that white light from the above candelabra created dancing dots of indescence magically floating over the wine. And on second check the shroud of the vintage had been shed to reveal typical cos aromas of currant, dark spice, camphor, licorice and tar and those same notes appear in the palate where the camphor and licorice play as mad scientists to create a minty taste. Tannins are soft and well integrated on the palate and become more prominent on the long finish and are Bordeaux grippy but quite friendly. Clearly good drinking now but might improve over the next 3-5 years with the development of more tertiary flavors but I like the tannins now. So why else do we drink Bordeaux?

  • 2010 Louis Jadot Corton-Pougets Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot

On the nose singed wood with Pinot fruit. Smells like this wine was made next to a quarry. Relatively thick, generous red fruit for a corton with soft tannins that fan out and become more prominent on the infinite finish. The stony note re-emerges as the wine departs and works with the tannins to create shimmering beauty and length.

  • 2002 Michel Magnien Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers

On the nose red fruit with secondary notes of earth and saddle leather developing after 45 minutes of air plus 45 minutes in the glass. Good fruit on the mid-palate consisting of red and darker fruit and a long relatively rich finish. When first sipped, the tannins were light and pixelated but with time developed into a gentle firm wall but still not obtrusive making me think this wine could go another 5 years but drinking good now.
