Was looking forward to this, having recently retrieved for the wine society's cellars - however, pretty disappointing; not much botrytis on the nose or palate but initially decent honey, pineapple tones which are then overwhelmed by massive acidity - not balanced at all and a very long 'sherbet lemon, pinched face' after taste at the back of the mouth. Insufficient sweetness to carry the acidity means this never feels right.

Initial impression sweet in the mouth but massive acidity - made to make your mouth water, and some! Couldn't get past it. Almost sour - and sweet but wow that's sour too. Novelty value high but unsatisfying.

I was gob-smacked at how good this was, opened on our son's 13th birthday. 99 was a pretty good year for champagnes and we have some belters stored up for his 18th, 21st etc. A quiet Chinese supper at home warranted something to mark the occasion and I opened the first of these for a pre-prandial toast -and that was the right word, a lively mouse and a toasty nose was matched by real depth - brioche, balanced acidity and a long, long finish - wow! The first from a case that cost only £20 a bottle which I thought I'd use to mark the less auspicious birthdays and save the Grand Annee, DP, Krug et al for the biggies. Now I'm looking forward to the others too! The photo isn't the same bottle I opened (curvy bottle) so I will update although given the low volume of tasting notes it might just be for my own benefit
