  • 2004 Vinosia Taurasi

Dark color, looks like a baby. On the nose, what is up with the oak??? If I was served this blind, there is no way I would've guessed this to be a Taurasi. Ripe fruit, with a creamy vanilla floral thing going on. On the palate, too much oak for sure. Shows more like a New World wine than what one would usually expect from a Taurasi. Fairly low acidity, lots of dark fruit, and that's about it. Tannins have definitely mellowed at this point, so drink up. Not really my personal cup of tea.

Holy cow, I feel like this invaded my mouth and took me on a trip I probably shouldn't have gone on until 20 years from now or so. Nose is already showing amazingly. Super primal and animal aromas made pretty with a spritz of violets and dark fruit, and an intriguing tar component as well. Like someone hit a deer with their car on a hot day on the highway and then tried to cover up a torn apart deer carcass lying on the asphalt by putting some flowers and some wild blackberries on top. In the mouth, showing classic Syrah flavors of dark fruit, olives, raw gamey meat, some floral underbrush characteristics, and a dusting of white pepper. But holy cow, this has the tannins and acidity to last a lifetime. If it wasn't for the intensity of the flavor of the wine, my mouth would be crushed by the tannin. Fun to check in on on this now, but do yourself a favor, buy a case, and explore this over your lifetime. A classic example of Syrah. 94+.

  • 2000 Rudi Pichler Riesling Smaragd Wösendorfer Kirchweg

10 years old?? Pfft! You would never even think it. This bottle was fresh as a daisy, even after being found in the basement of a PLCB Wine & Spirits state store, being stored standing up for God knows how long. Beautiful golden color typical of aged Riesling. Upon first pour, nose is slightly muted, just showing some crushed Golden Delicious apple and a whisper of diesel/petrol. After an hour of air time, this really starts to sing with white flower, ginger (almost some Gewurz characteristics), lime, herbs, and, naturally, lots of minerals. Very powerful nose on this wine, could sit and smell this for hours. The palate is still bright and fresh with great tingling acidity showing lots of pit fruits, orange zest, kumquat, and finishes with beautiful tropical fruit like guava and mango. It is just barely showing some age with a very slight walnut shell meets campfire smoke flavor profile on the midpalate leading to the finish, which I found very intriguing. The intensity dies down a bit on the midpalate when compared to the strong initial attack and long finish, but overall this is a very nice wine (although I do think the nose on this was slightly better than that actual palate here). Showing less age than many red wines half it's age, I think this will still gain complexity for another 5 years or so. If drinking now definitely give it plenty of air. I recently tasted the 2007 Terrassen bottling from Pichler, which was painfully young, so I am convinced these wines are built for the long haul. Definitely worth the $16 I paid for this; I am glad that I have one more bottle left to revisit in a couple years! 91+.
