Expert tasting note: "Deep, dark, virtually opaque Ruby-red color. Cassis fruit on the nose is overlaid by spicy oak and slightly leafy tannins. On the palate this is a really classic Ch Batailley with Cassis fruit, blackcurrant leaf and tobacco, Acid is sufficient to lift the fruit well & slightly warming alcohol adds weight & roundness to the finish. - Producer Notes
- Château Batailley, a 5th Cru of the classification of 1855, is Borie-Manoux’s and the Castéja-family’s flagship. The name is derived from the battle („bataille“) that took place where the chateau and vineyard are today during the 100-years war around 1453. In this battle, the French re-conquered the neighbouring Chateau Latour from the English, a crucial point for ending the 300 year long reign of the English in Aquitaine. In the 16th century, the first vines were planted on these historical and blood soaked grounds. Chateau Batailley’s 5ha-park was designed by BarilletDeschamps, Napoleon III’s park architect, in 1850. In 1855 Napoleon III created the classification for the Grands Crus Classés of the Medoc. And Batailley was knighted Grand Cru Classé. Batailley is a classic and a very typical Pauillac, with Cassis flavours and very good structure.

Tasted: Apr 2021
The nose is aromatic, racy and offers a small concentration, a certain power, deepness and a small side of hot gravels. It reveals notes of quite ripe raspberry, ripe wild cassis and small notes of hot gravels associated with touches of Sichuan pepper, fresh mild tobacco as well as hints of underwood and a discreet hint of cuben pepper. The palate is fruity, fresh, mineral and offers gourmandize, tension, finesse, a beautiful finesse of the grain, an aerial side, a stretchy/in tension side and a fine acidulous frame. On the palate this wine expresses notes of juicy/ripe blackberry, wild raspberry and small notes of cassis associated with touches of pulpy/juicy blue plum, cornflower, liquorice, fine hints of toasted, caramelization, tobacco as well as very fine hints of clove, underwood and a very discreet hint of vanilla (in the background). Good length. Tannins are elegant, precise and relatively chewy.

Only a few more years of bottle age has added a lot to this wine. Juicy cassis, blackberry, tobacco, smoke, cedar aromatics pop with no effort. Refined tannins and an elegant, medium.full bodied palate presence, with a bite of cassis in the end note are what you'll find here. This should be close to peak with another 7-8 years or so of age, and continue from there offering nice drinking for another decade or 2. 93 Points

Graphite and wild berryish compote, a hint of white pepper, on the palate lots of juice and drive, cashmere-like tannin extremely restrained in quantity, round and elegant with finesse, has an amazing early form, good length.

Schmeckt kurz nach der Abfüllung bereits so geschmeidig, so ausgewogen und verführerisch, dass man davon heimlich gleich noch einen Schluck nehmen möchte. Gross? Keine Ahnung. Vergnüglich? Garantiert! (unter 40 Euro).

With advice from consultant and Bordeaux University professor Denis Dubourdieu, Batailley has improved immensely in the past few years. This 2010 reinforces that trend, revealing a wine that is structured with Cabernet Sauvignon and is attractive with black currant fruitiness. Age for the medium-term.
